The 2026 Master Guide to Indian Exam Document Uploads

The difference between a successful application and a rejected one often comes down to 10KB. Master the standards for every major Indian portal.

Applying for a government job or a national entrance exam in India is a high-stakes process. You spend years preparing for the syllabus, but many candidates never even get to sit for the exam because their application is rejected at the Document Upload stage.

The software used by UPSC, SSC, and NTA (for NEET/JEE) is outdated and extremely rigid. It does not "auto-fix" your images. If you are 1 pixel off or 1KB over, the system will simply show a generic error like "Invalid File Specification". This guide provides the exact specifications to ensure 100% acceptance.

UPSC (IAS/IFS/NDA) Specifications

UPSC portals are the most technically demanding. They require a "Scanned Photograph" and "Scanned Signature" with specific pixel ratios.

UPSC Precise Requirements:

  • Format .JPG only
  • Photo/Sign Size 20KB to 300KB
  • Min Dimensions 350 x 350 px
  • Recommended Dimensions 550 x 550 px

Critical Hint: UPSC requires the filename to be simple. Avoid special characters. Rename your photo to my_photo.jpg instead of WhatsApp_Image_2026.jpg.

SSC (Staff Selection Commission) Updates

SSC has recently shifted its strategy. For exams like **SSC CGL and CHSL**, they now emphasize "Live Photo Capture" through their official app. However, for the signature and for other categories, scanned uploads are still mandatory.

SSC Scanned Signature Standards:

  • Signature Size 10KB to 20KB
  • Signature Dimensions 4.0 cm x 2.0 cm
  • Pixel Equivalent 140 x 60 px

Note: If you are using the SSC Live Photo feature, ensure you are standing against a white wall with no shadows. Even a slight shadow on your face can lead to biometric mismatch during the Tier-1 exam.

NEET & JEE (NTA Guidelines)

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is arguably the strictest. They require multiple documents including a Postcard size photo and a Passport size photo.

Passport Size Photo

10KB to 200KB. Background must be white. 80% face coverage. No spectacles unless worn regularly.

Postcard Size (4"x6")

50KB to 300KB. High resolution. Must include name and date of photo taken at the bottom.

Common Troubleshooting

Error: "File Type Not Supported"

Even if your file ends in .jpg, it might actually be a renamed .webp or .heic (common on iPhones). Use our Convert to JPG tool to re-encode the file properly before uploading.

Error: "Resolution is Too Low"

This happens when you download a photo from WhatsApp. WhatsApp compresses images so much that they lose the necessary metadata. Always use original scans or use an upscaler.
